Strawberries

Finally, this weekend, that rain has stopped. And, just in time. Literally, it has rained everyday for the last three weeks and although it has suppressed outside time, it has made for some lucisious gardens.

If there is one thing that our family craves this time of year, it's berries. Right now, strawberries are in season all throughout the region. Not far from us, there is an amazing farm. They grow every vegetable you can think of and right now, their pick-your-own-strawberries field is full of takers.

The field was open until noon yesterday. We tried to get up early and go, but ended up sleeping in a bit longer than expected. We finally got out of the house at about 9:30am. We arrived around 10:30, scooted ourselves over to the farm stand and asked for a two "flats" and a basket for Aiden. A nice young woman escorted us into the field and set up flagging to show us our section. Because so many people are picking, you have to stick to your part of the field. Walking into the field, you can smell the sweet, fresh scent in the air.

We picked until closing time and ended up with about 10pounds of strawberries. For $1.50 a pound, it's well worth it. When we got back home we washed them, cut them up and put them into bags in the freezer to pull out whenever we're ready. Come about Feburary, when the Earth is frigid and cabin fever is setting in, we'll pull out a bag of these strawberries and enjoy the taste of high summer.

woah! 10 pounds!

Is the pick-your-own phenomenon new? Or just new to me? I honestly thought that sort of thing was only done with apples in New England. Silly me.

But, if it's not new....I wonder why my mom never took me....hmmm...

High summer, yes! A perfect way to describe what strawberries stand for! We picked 16 quarts this year. Froze most and have been nibbling on them for weeks. I love strawberries!
